The Delicate Demand of Colocation
In the 1990's, the abrupt about-face of supply vs. demand rapidly changed forcing many colocation companies to either cut back or permanently close their doors. Nearly ten years later, many smaller companies have turned to colocation facilities for their data center needs, finding it difficult to obtain and justify the high capital expense of building in a down economy, and even larger companies are seeking colocation providers as part of a diverse deployment strategy. Thus, the demand for colocation space has increased to the point of raising prices on square footage, and colocation companies are once again at the supply/demand fork in the road and must decide whether building will reap its rewards in the long-run.
